A workshop facilitated by Julian Borkowski.
This session will provide participants with skills to understand jazz leadsheets. It is not a requirement to have participated in previous Surrey Jazz Nights Workshops to attend this session.
This workshop will be facilitated by Julian Borkowski who is a local Surrey jazz trumpeter and pianist. Julian will guide participants through how to read and interpret a jazz lead sheet as it relates to their specific instrument. Topics will include understanding the flexibility and freedoms of a lead sheet, recognizing common jazz chord progressions, and learning how to solo or accompany effectively. Participants will also explore how a lead sheet can be used to shape an entire performance of a song.
We recommend this workshop to anyone who is open to musicians ages 13 to 18 at a beginner/intermediate level. Participants should be comfortable playing their given instrument along with reading sheet music and have some experience improvising in a jazz setting. If you would like to attend the workshop but not participate (i.e. you wouldn’t play during the workshop) please feel free to indicate that in the form.
If you are unsure if this workshop would be best suited for your age, playing level, or you have any other questions please feel free to reach out to Harmeet via email (surreyjazznights@gmail.com), message us on Instagram, or visit our Website and we’ll be more than happy to provide additional guidance.
