This session will introduce participants to the basic skills of jazz composition. It is not a requirement to have participated in previous Surrey Jazz Nights Workshops to attend this session.
We have all heard jazz music at some point. But how many of us could explain exactly what makes a jazz composition unique from other genres?
This workshop will:
1) explain how certain musical elements (melodies, chords, rhythms, etc.) can sound jazzy
2) introduce participants to composing in a jazz style
3) offer strategies and advice on how to continue refining your compositional personality
We recommend this workshop open to musicians ages 13 to 18 at a beginner/intermediate level. Participants should be comfortable playing their given instrument along with reading sheet music.
If you would like to attend the workshop but not participate (i.e. you wouldn’t play during the workshop) please feel free to indicate that in the form.
If you are unsure if this workshop would be best suited for your age, playing level, or you have any other questions please feel free to reach out to Harmeet via email (surreyjazznights@gmail.com), or message us on Instagram and we’ll be more than happy to provide additional guidance.
