Introduction to Jazz Improvisation

Saturday, November 15, 2025

About This Event

On Saturday, November 15, Surrey Jazz Nights is hosting their first music workshop in partnership with the Surrey Libraries!

The workshop topic is An Introduction to Jazz Improvisation led by Julian Borkowski. Julian is a local Surrey jazz trumpeter and pianist. Participants will work with Julian and cover topics such as common jazz chords and how they are built, basic patterns and approaches to improvisation in a jazz setting, and will end with participants applying these skills in their playing.

We recommend this workshop to anyone who is new to jazz or improvising in a jazz setting from the ages 13 to 18. Participants should have a basic understanding to play their given instrument along with reading sheet music and recommend they have been playing their instrument for a minimum of 6-12 months. If you would like to attend the workshop but not participate (i.e. you wouldn’t play during the workshop) please feel free to indicate that in the form.

If you are unsure if this workshop would be best suited for your age, playing level, or you have any other questions please feel free to reach out via the Contact page, or by messaging us on Instagram.
